A rear extension opened up with 6m of aluminium bifolds

A single-storey rear extension on a 1930s semi. The clients wanted the kitchen-diner to feel continuous with the garden — but the wall run also needed to hit modern thermal performance and take a family of four's daily wear.

A rear extension opened up with 6m of aluminium bifolds — St Albans, Hertfordshire

The challenge

6.2 metres of clear opening with a structural steel beam above. Bifolds needed to stack cleanly to one side without eating into the internal worktop run, and the whole assembly had to be installed in a single day to keep the kitchen fit-out on schedule.

Our solution

We specified a 6-panel aluminium bifold in graphite grey with a low threshold, thermally-broken frames, and 28mm A-rated glazing. Two matching fixed picture windows flanked the doors, and three flush-glazed rooflights delivered mid-room daylight. Installation was completed in a single day with a factory-prepped subframe.

The outcome

The kitchen-diner reads as one continuous space with the garden. Whole-window U-value of 0.9 – 1.4 W/m²K across all new apertures, tested air leakage under 3 m³/h·m² at 50 Pa. The main contractor kept the kitchen install on programme.
