Pivot Doors — London & the Home Counties

The architectural statement — an oversized single leaf up to 1.4m wide and 2.8m tall pivoting on a concealed floor spring, in vertical-grain oak veneer or slim-frame aluminium. The right entrance for a contemporary architect-designed home where a standard 900mm door looks apologetic against the elevation.

Signature detail

The floor-spring pivot

A concealed Dorma or GEZE hydraulic floor-spring carries 250 kg of oak or aluminium and self-closes at a controlled speed. Nothing visible above the door head, nothing hanging off the frame — the leaf rotates on a hair-line axis as if suspended in space. It's what makes the door read as architecture rather than joinery.

Overview

A closer look at what makes the pivot doors range distinctive — the specification, the styles, the process, and the answers to the questions we get asked most.

Specification

Vertical-grain European white-oak veneer or thermally-broken aluminium · Dorma/GEZE hydraulic floor-spring pivot · concealed multi-point hook locking · A-rated argon glazing on glazed variants

01

Oversized Single Leaf

Up to 1.4m wide and 2.8m tall — three times the surface area of a standard entrance door. The single most impactful architectural gesture on any modern elevation.

02

Concealed Floor-Spring Pivot

Dorma or GEZE hydraulic floor-spring mechanism carries a 250 kg leaf and self-closes at a controlled speed. No hinges to sag, no top-track, no visible mechanism.

03

Vertical-Grain Oak or Slim-Frame Aluminium

European white-oak veneer with vertical grain and a satin lacquer, or matte-black thermally-broken aluminium with slim frame. Choose the material to match the rest of the elevation.

04

Statement-Length Pull Handle

Full-height brushed brass, bronze, black or stainless pull — 1.8m tall on the average pivot door, the ironmongery statement in its own right.

05

PAS 24 Multi-Point Locking

Concealed multi-point hook locking despite the pivot geometry — no compromise on security for the sake of the aesthetic.

06

LED-Lit Reveal Option

Integrated warm-white LED strip in the door reveal above and below — the pivot moves through a lit portal at dusk. A single detail that transforms the elevation.

Common questions

Practical answers.

Everything homeowners ask us about pivot doors — survey, lead times, guarantees and coverage.

How does a pivot door differ from a regular hinged door?+

A hinged door hangs from two or three hinges on one edge. A pivot rotates on a single central axis top and bottom — the door swings past the frame equally on both sides. It allows a much wider, heavier leaf than hinges can carry, and it looks unmistakably architectural.

Is a pivot door secure?+

Yes — the multi-point hook locking is concealed within the frame and behaves the same as any PAS 24 door. The pivot is structural (250 kg carrying capacity) and cannot be levered off.

Does it self-close?+

Yes — the Dorma or GEZE hydraulic floor-spring has adjustable closing speed and back-check. Open the door and let go and it eases back to closed on a controlled hydraulic damper. No slam.

What should I consider before choosing a pivot door?+

Pivot doors need generous structural openings, specialist floor-spring hardware and careful coordination of glazing and ironmongery. They work best as a statement entrance on an architect-designed elevation.

Can a pivot door be used as a back or side door?+

Rarely — the aesthetic is designed to be seen. For a rear elevation we more often specify a slim-frame slider or bifold. Pivot doors work best as the main architectural entrance.
