What is a good U-value for replacement windows?
A U-value measures how much heat escapes through a window per square metre for every degree of temperature difference between inside and outside. The lower the number, the better the window insulates. It is quoted in W/m²K, and the whole-window figure — not just the centre-pane number a manufacturer might print in a brochure — is the one that governs Building Regulations and real-world performance.

That range suits replacement-window projects across London, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire. The exact figure depends on the frame, glass, spacer bar, size and opening configuration stated in your specification.
Window Energy Ratings and U-values
The Window Energy Rating (WER) scale — A++, A+, A, B and so on — is a British Fenestration Rating Council convention that combines U-value, solar gain and air leakage into a single letter. A-rated is the current sensible minimum; A+ or A++ is worth specifying on rooms with large glazed areas.
Ask any installer for the WER certificate for the exact product they are proposing. If they cannot produce one, you cannot verify what you are buying.
Why installation quality affects thermal performance
Two windows can carry the same headline rating and behave very differently after fitting. The insulation of the frame, the quality of the warm-edge spacer, the argon fill retention, and — crucially — how carefully the installer seals the reveal all matter. This is especially important in London terraces, exposed Chiltern homes, Hertfordshire commuter-belt properties, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire new-builds, and solid-wall cottages in Oxfordshire.
Choosing energy-efficient glazing for your area
London homes often need thermal improvement balanced with acoustic glass, narrow sightlines or conservation requirements. Across Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, exposed and heritage properties may need flush profiles and carefully detailed reveals. In Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, the same 0.9–1.4 W/m²K window range can be configured for period houses, family estates and modern extensions.
A measured home survey is the reliable way to compare products. We confirm the whole-window U-value for each proposed unit and explain whether double glazing, triple glazing or a different frame system is appropriate for the elevation.
It depends on the property and elevation. A well-specified A-rated double-glazed window already achieves strong thermal performance for many London and Home Counties homes. Triple glazing can suit very exposed sites or projects with a specific performance target; we confirm the whole-window figure at survey.
Approved Document L requires replacement windows to achieve a whole-window U-value of 1.4 W/m²K or better, or a WER of Band B and above.
