uPVC vs aluminium: an honest comparison for UK homes
Sightlines, thermal performance, longevity and design suitability. What each material is genuinely good at — and where installers oversell the alternative.
The one-line summary
uPVC is a sensible default for many replacement projects — warm, versatile and quick to fit, and available in convincing woodgrain finishes. Aluminium comes into its own when sightlines matter: bifold and sliding doors, contemporary picture windows, and large glazed extensions where a slim frame is the whole point.
Neither material is inherently better. They solve different problems, and a good installer will specify one, the other, or a mix depending on the elevation.
Thermal performance
uPVC frames insulate better than aluminium by nature — the plastic is a poor conductor of heat, so a mid-range uPVC window comfortably achieves a whole-window U-value within the 0.9 – 1.4 W/m²K range. Aluminium frames must be broken with a polyamide thermal barrier to compete, and premium systems now match uPVC on U-value while keeping the frame slim.
In practice, the glazing unit — the argon fill, the low-E coating, and the warm-edge spacer — accounts for more thermal loss than the frame material on any modern window. Frame material is secondary to specification.
Sightlines and design
Aluminium wins decisively on slim sightlines. A modern aluminium bifold has a 100mm mullion where a uPVC equivalent is closer to 120mm, and aluminium picture windows can carry a 25mm frame that uPVC simply cannot match structurally. On heritage projects, a flush-casement uPVC in a woodgrain finish reads convincingly as timber from three metres — but bifolds, corner-post windows and full-height glazing belong in aluminium.
Longevity and maintenance
Both materials are genuinely low-maintenance. uPVC has a working life of 25–35 years before the plastic loses its rigidity around gaskets; aluminium comfortably exceeds 40 years. Powder-coated aluminium holds its finish for 20+ years with an occasional wipe. Foil-wrapped uPVC in dark colours can fade on south-facing elevations after 12–15 years, though modern acrylic-capped foils have improved this dramatically.
Choosing by project and lead time
Lead times typically run 8–10 weeks for aluminium and 3–4 weeks for uPVC. On a whole-house replacement, mixing the two — aluminium bifolds at the back, uPVC sashes and casements elsewhere — lets each elevation use the material best suited to its design and performance needs.
For bifolds, sliders and large picture windows, aluminium offers slim sightlines that uPVC cannot match. For standard casements and sashes, uPVC is often the natural choice.
Modern foil-wrapped uPVC in anthracite grey or a woodgrain finish is a long way from the white plastic frames of the 1990s. On the right elevation it is indistinguishable from painted timber at normal viewing distance.
